Local Determining Asylum Commission

In Italy, asylum applications are first examined by the Local Determining Asylum Commissions, administrative organs located throughout the nation.

There are 20 Commissions currently operational, and they are composed of four members: an official of the Territorial Government Office (Prefecture), as chairman, an official of the State Police, a local authority representative, and an UNHCR delegate; all members have the right to vote and decisions on individual cases can be taken by majority vote, or with the favourable vote of at least three members.

The Commission holds hearings to determine whether there are serious grounds for believing there is a risk to life or serious harm to the applicant.
