UNICEF

The Italian Committee for Unicef - Onlus (often shortened to UNICEF Italia) is an integral part of the global structure of Unicef - United Nations Children’s Fund, the subsidiary body of the UN which has the mandate to protect and promote the rights of girls, boys, and adolescents (0-18 years old) worldwide and to contribute to the improvement of their living conditions.

Its peculiarity is thus to be both a non-governmental organisation (NGO) placed in the Italian Third Sector scene and a representative of an inter-governmental United Nations programme. As an NGO, Unicef Italia also has the status of “Onlus” (Non-Profit Organization of Social Utility - NPO).

Since 1974, the Italian Committee has operated in the name and on behalf of UNICEF, on the basis of a Cooperation Agreement stipulated with Unicef International and according to a joint and continuous planning of its activities whose main instrument is the Joint Strategic Programme (Jsp), renewed on a three-yearly basis.

Consistent with the main organisation, Unicef Italia’s action is also inspired by the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Adolescence and on the Millennium Development Goals.
The Italian Committee for Unicef is made up of a professional structure and a network of volunteers with a widespread presence throughout Italy.

Unicef promotes actions aimed at protecting the health of minors, the education and integration of unaccompanied foreign minors and at improving the Italian reception system with interventions at reception facilities and in schools as well as intercultural, workshop and sports activities.
