First reception
Hotspots are centres in which migrants are gathered when they arrive in Italy. This is where they receive the first necessary medical treatment, they undergo health screening, and are identified for the record.
At the hotspots, foreign citizens’ photo and fingerprints are taken and processed for the purpose of positive identification to comply with Articles 9 and 14 of the EURODAC Regulation.
Foreigners concurrently receive information on the international protection procedures, the relocation programme in other EU Member States, and the option of assisted voluntary repatriation.
Following the initial assessment, migrants applying for asylum are transferred to an initial reception centre, where they are detained for the time necessary to find a arrangement in the secondary reception system.
